As I delved into the 2024 feature film “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” I was torn between the elation of discovery and the nagging curiosity about what had come before. Throughout the narrative journey, the developments kept me intrigued. I wasn’t sure whether to press forward or return to the previous installments, and this conflicted feeling kept me glued to the screen.
I have to confess I was never drawn to ” The Strangers” franchise. Nowadays, franchises seem money-driven, focused solely on exploiting their stories for profit. For “The Strangers,” this latest addition was pegged as a prequel.
The Challenge of Franchise Films
Each film in a successful franchise should stand independently. However, it does not mean that fans may not feel compelled to revisit other installments out of curiosity. Unfortunately, most franchises, especially those that are overly expansive, have only a few notable films in the series. The hope is always its the feature in which one is currently invested that is the best.
A Journey into Unmotivated Terror
In the opening of “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” a man frantically runs from an unknown terror, a typical theme of modern horror thrillers. But his escape is short-lived, as he is quickly ensnared. As our journey into this film begins, a powerful message flashes across the screen: that there are a lot of instances wherein violence is unprovoked, meaning “Violence has no motive.” It simply stems from a violent nature.
Trapped in Terror

As the story advances, we focus on a young, carefree couple. Despite their effortless charm and evident affection for one another, our understanding of them is limited. The two stop at a small, out-of-the-way diner, where the locals greet them with strange and unsettling behavior. The tension is palpable as the townspeople’s judgmental gazes scream for the couple to leave immediately. It is an uncomfortable and eerie situation that screams peril.
The couple is acutely aware of the unsettling atmosphere and desperately longs for their journey to end. Unfortunately, fate has trapped them in this forsaken small town, where strangeness and strangers lurk every minute. As ominous incidents and eerie figures relentlessly haunt them, their panic grows exponentially. It becomes clear that they are not just paranoid but trapped in a waking nightmare with no escape.
The Lingering Unease of the Strangers: Chapter 1

The Strangers: Chapter 1 will leave you profoundly unsettled. It effectively conveys the level of caution to be demonstrated toward strangers in remote towns, no less, especially those with self-righteous ideations.
The locale chosen for this production is the appropriate setting for such a story. This is not a film with an extensive cast of characters. However, the ones cast bring the story to life, giving it an air of vibrantly authentic fear and desperation. As the credits rolled, I couldn’t shake off the lingering disquiet. I craved more answers. I reasoned that this would require me to watch the previous installments to grasp the narrative fully.
It also dawned on me that maybe there’s nothing more to explore. The true purpose is to show that the violence demonstrated through the narrative is representative of the ever-present darkness that exists, with no meaning and no provocation. And in such a case, the film does a great job of drumming up the desire to stay committed to more of the work just to confirm that discovery. That brings us back to the informative blurb at the beginning.
An Engaging Entry: The Strangers: Chapter 1
The movie is an impressive addition that caught my interest and encouraged me to delve into other parts of the franchise. It fulfilled its purpose of entertaining and enticing. However, it’s imperative to mention that my view might have shifted if I had seen the earlier films first. Perhaps a more comprehensive perspective would stem from the insights of viewers who have already ventured into the murky and abysmal world of “The Strangers ” franchise. Nevertheless, this installment is definitely worth a watch, especially for those who enjoy nightmarish thrillers.
