There are two primary characters in this film: a mother and daughter. Claire Hiller (Connie Britton) and her daughter, Robin Hiller (Freya Hannan-Mills)
Robin is an exceptionally talented yet afflicted pianist. She is so talented that her gifts earn her an audition at an esteemed conservatory. Her infliction does not seem to be a barrier. Robin appears to be a member of the unvoiced community who is imbued with extreme expressionism she expresses through music.
It is easy for the viewer to deduce that Robin’s affliction results from an injurious event or a birth defect. As we follow along, we discover that it goes much deeper. There are other groundings that contribute to the dynamic than was initially thought.
The Hidden Truths Within Family Bonds
It is not hard to see that the mother treasures her daughter deeply. One also senses a bit of oversensitivity. This is also understandable as we are made aware relatively early on that there is strain in this family dynamic. We are never explicitly told what that is. Tension and apprehnsive nature of which both mother and daughter approach the dialogue gives us the clues needed. Robin despite her stressors or desires, tries to maintain harmony between her parents , striving to satisfy both of them over a decision as simple as a celebratory venture post recital.
The arc becomes clearer upon the inciting incident, a horrifying accident which illuminates something hidden, long buried (a skelton in the closet).
Transversing the Arc
The progression of the plot reveals disturbing changes.The daughter, fresh from the brink, exhibits a change in behavior—includes sudden mood swings and inexplicable actions. As darkness spreads, threatening to engulf them, the dirt surrounding the buried secrets continues to shake loose. This is an escalation that continues until the characters understand they must unearth the bones from their watery grave. Revalation conquers darkness.
The Poetic Essence of “The Here After”
” Here After” has a beautiful poetic structure. The unfolding is subtle yet shocking—a story that consistently surprises us, drawing us further into the narrative’s core and making clear the path.
Upon closer examination, it becomes evident that this narrative is a unique interpretation of a ghost story, straying into the realm of a possession tale. It wins extra points for its exploration of the intriguing topic of twin connections, a subject that has captivated many researchers over the years.
This piece stands out for its artistic storytelling approach as well as other points of artistry. The cinematography for one is stellar. It is mesmerizing, especially during the darkest moments of the feature. It can be explained as a visual feast that will enthrall and elevate the narrative.
Emotion runs deep throughout the film, and little dialogue is needed to evoke it. The underlying themes are haunting. The resoultion is satisfying as it brings redemption, closure, and harmony to the tense plot, which is always welcome.
A Critique of Nuance
Connie Britton’s performance is the weakest aspect of this piece. Britton is a familiar face in film and typically she delivers solid performances. In this piece, her acting lacks nuance. At times, she successfully captures her character’s emotions, but sometimes it feels forced and unnatural.
We can detect that her character is undergoing turmoil, and we understand why. However, it seems Britton struggles to fully connect with her own wellspring of emotions. Thus, we do not engage more deeply with the character’s emotional state. This prevents us from having a more visceral experience that makes a story more impactful.
A Thought-Provoking Exploration
“Here After” is a skillfully made film exploring profound themes. It invites viewers to reflect on questions like what happens after death and can guilt transform into something monstrous if not confronted.
Additionally, it examines the complex dynamic of the twin connection, something that has intrigued and perplexed people for ages. An inquiry such as does the connection transcend time and space? Is the connection eternal? These are both powerful drivers.
This film will astound you with its emotional depth and challenge to perceptions. That is what makes it essential viewing.
