Titles can be misleading, for better or for worse. Regrettably, this can present a significant challenge. A title can cause potential viewers to keep scrolling past. There is a missed opportunity to make an impact. This happens often and almost happened to me. Despite having it on my list, I can’t recall how many times I scrolled past “The Woman of the Hour.” I couldn’t bring myself to watch it. However, it’s crucial to remember that everything has its appropriate time and place. And when I eventually watched it, I can say it left an impression. It was not what I expected but in the best way possible.

The Complexities of Terror

This film follows a woman who inadvertently becomes the target of a serial killer. It is not an ordinary meeting. Their encounter leaves a lasting impression on them, on the viewing public, and on us. This story is unique as the topic, identified by the title, is part of a much larger and more complex narrative. The entire context can be found in one portion of the film, but it is only a piece of the entire puzzle.

Unmasking the Antagonist

The movie opens with the antagonist, which viewers can identify relatively early. He is a young adult. He appears kind and empathetic; this is due to his attentive character. He speaks to the woman, with whom he converses gently and understandingly. What follows is a sense of liberation; we sense it through the stillness, the serenity of the surroundings, the momentary silence. He asks to capture her essence through his camera lens, demonstrating he is an artist at heart. It is almost like he is reverent. It’s not long before we understand that something darker drives him—pain. He takes from others instead of giving, using empathy as a lure.

The Allure of Deception

As the story unfolds, we see that the ploy of empathy is a method of his madness—how this photographer charms different women to doom them to the inevitable. By focusing on his victims’ feelings of being unseen or unappreciated, he gets close enough to turn his capture into his prey.

His calm and reassuring nature keeps him hidden in plain sight. No one sees him for who he truly is—not even those who look directly at him.

The Game of Charm

The most pivotal moment occurs when he becomes a contestant on a popular dating show. His scheme plays out for the world. He uses his charm to win over the female contestant. Despite his smooth talk and all the right answers, he fails this time. Something stops her from falling for his tactics. She is unlike his usual targets.

The entire film context can be found in their conversation following their matching. After discovering she is indifferent to his charms, he probes her for purpose. She surprises him by saying her purpose is not what he suspects. She came on the show to further her career. Her desire was to be seen, yet she felt looked at. This revelation stalled the predator, who admits he has rarely encountered people who truly want to be seen.

The Power of Shared Pain

But the story doesn’t end there. It delves deeper into the notion that our greatest desire is to be seen and understood. There is another victim who follows the “woman of the hour.” She is unlike the woman prior. She is younger, running from something, seemingly lost. She becomes the predator’s most suitable prey. She escapes. This is not because of his victim’s strength but his weakness. She appealed to a shared pain and perceived acceptance of his darkness, effectively convincing him that she indeed sees him. This breakthrough dissolves his guard, allowing her breathing room to escape.

Call For Awareness

The ending was as horrifying as what was discovered after each revelation. Despite numerous witnesses who reported him, it was a while before he was accosted. After he was caught, he was released, leading to even more deaths, which is one of the most impactful parts of the entire film.

The film’s message is powerful and thought-provoking. It reminds us of human blindness and human needs. It is important to acknowledge someone beyond their being. Seeing people rather than merely looking at them can prevent heinous acts. This resonated deeply with me. The creative team is to be commended for their engaging storytelling.

Craftsmanship on Display

Other notable features include costumes, set designs, and the alignment of these technicalities to envoke an authentic atmosphere. The cinematography is sharp, focusing on the subtle nuances of body language and expressionism. Through the lens, we see the depths of emotion—desperation and longing—showcasing exceptional talent. As a sympathetic serial killer, Daniel Zovatto delivers an outstanding performance.

The Core of Artistic Value

Everyone experiences art in their own way. That’s the beauty art. To hold value, it must offer something meaningful, whether that be through knowledge acquired, perspective, or inspiration. The level of success is subjective and depends on how well it resonates with an individual.

With a solid foundation, a captivating premise, an impactful conclusion, a powerful message, impressive technical aspects, and talented actors, this film is undoubtedly a substantial piece of work. I highly recommend watching “Woman of the Hour” on Netflix.
