A Surge of Story: The Strength of The King Tide

The King Tide

Who could resist a film that delivers a clear message with artistic flair? Recently, I discovered a story so compelling that its impact is undeniable. As JoBlo observes,

“It’s a rather dark tale, reminiscent of Rod Serling and The Twilight Zone, blending the supernatural with a traditional morality story.”

“The King Tide” offers an incredibly compelling and captivating narrative.

When The Tide Rolls In

“The King Tide,” is a tale about a remote fishing village by the coast, far removed from the city. As the tide comes in, so does prosperity for the town. This impoverished community perceives the discovery of a baby girl washed ashore as a hidden blessing. A family is chosen to care for her, a mother and father who also become the leading figures of the small village. The villagers quickly realize the baby, named Isla, possesses miraculous abilities. She can heal others and ensure their nets are brimming with fish. For ten years, she serves as the town’s savior until circumstances change.

Isla’s Bane

When Isla can no longer heal while awake, the townspeople grow desperate. Discovering that she can still heal in her dreams, they resort to manipulative methods to keep her and benefit from her miracles. However, they remain unaware that what once saved them will ultimately lead to their downfall.

The Art of The Mechanics

In this story, Isla is intriguingly portrayed as both the hero and the antagonist. Although Isla lacks personal agency for much of the narrative, her objective is intertwined with that of the townspeople, who aim to keep themselves healthy. Another intriguing aspect is that while the townspeople initially serve as the antagonists, Isla eventually takes on this role as well. The entire town strives to hide and monopolize the girl’s power for themselves. At its core, taking away someone’s consent for personal gain is dark and malevolent. As events take a dramatic turn, the story’s moral becomes apparent: excess of a good thing can be detrimental. Be cautious of the traps you set for others, as they may lead to your own downfall. Ego and selfishness can be the catalysts for one’s ruin.

An Apex Moment

Another significant moment in the movie is its captivating climax. The tension builds gradually yet intensely, leading to a standoff. The townspeople face a crucial decision that will greatly affect them and their intentions regarding Isla. Their actions to retain her drive them to a decisive moment, a point where there’s no turning back. Ironically, their choice backfires, resulting in Isla’s eventual liberation despite the town’s desperate efforts to control their destiny.

An Atmospheric Gem: The Impact of Setting and Cinematography

Another aspect worth highlighting is the film’s stylistic choices. Setting the film in Newfoundland is an ideal decision, capturing the isolation of a seaside town and the aspirations of its reliant inhabitants. It draws comparisons to other New England cities featured in some of Stephen King’s works, enhancing the story’s authenticity. The actors deliver their roles convincingly, and as another review mentions,

“There is not a single false note in terms of performances.”

The cinematography is nearly impeccable, contributing to the film’s perfect level of eeriness. I strongly recommend The King’s Tide to those who enjoy impactful stories that develop at a gradual pace.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
