There are moments when you might wonder why certain movies garner negative or mixed reviews. A discerning critic approaches such films with an open mind, choosing not to rely on the opinions of others. Instead, they delve into the world of criticism to draw their own conclusions about a film’s merits or shortcomings. Sometimes, this approach leads to discovering hidden gems, while other times, the criticism proves to be warranted. *Wicked* is a film that certainly demands independent viewing and judgment. For this reviewer, it was an exceptionally rewarding experience.
Baum Paves The Yellow Brick Road

“The Wizard of Oz ” was a mesmerizing film adaptation based on the enchanting works of Frank L. Baum. Originally penned in 1900, Baum’s tale has left an indelible mark on literature, cherished as a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences. This magical story inspired a stage play that made its debut in 1902, capturing the imaginations of theatergoers with its vibrant characters and whimsical narrative. Three decades later, the beloved tale was brought to life on the silver screen, allowing those who had yet to experience Dorothy’s moralistic journey to witness it in all its cinematic splendor.
For generations, it has become a rite of passage in childhood to watch Dorothy, portrayed by the iconic Judy Garland, swept away by a powerful tornado to a fantastical land. This land brims with enchanting munchkins, mischievous flying monkeys, a cowardly lion seeking courage, a tin man longing for a heart, a scarecrow desiring brains, a benevolent good witch, a wicked bad witch, and, of course, the mysterious and wonderful wizard himself.
Chasing the Rainbow
Many have embarked on the enchanting journey along the yellow brick road paved by Baum, crafting their own imaginative tales along the way. Among the most beloved stories to emerge from this inspiration is “Wicked,” a captivating narrative penned by American writer Gregory Maguire. A teacher and author of children’s literature, Maguire wrote “Wicked” as a vivid expression of his worldview, infused with themes of hope and possibility for those marginalized in society, embodying the spirit of resilience and triumph.
Maguires Inspired Inspiration

As Maguire himself shared, the concept for Elphaba’s story arose in part from his own experiences of feeling slightly ostracized. He sought to create a character
“whose behavior was perhaps stronger and braver and louder than mine, and from whom I could take an example about how to be brave and strong in this world.”
The tale unfolds with rich complexity, skillfully painting a portrait of resilience and courage in the face of adversity.

It is a compelling narrative, equally engaging and powerful as Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz.” This tale inspired adaptations first in theater and later as a feature film, remaining true to the core message that Maguire sought to convey. In an interview, he articulated,
“They’re analogs to being human. We are all different. We don’t always fit neatly into the roles others expect of us. It’s our own task to shape our identities or to leave the familiar behind and find a place where we truly belong.”
Its Not The Tale You Think You Know
Many recognize the characters in “Wicked” as the well-known figures from Oz: Glinda and the Wicked Witch, who is known here as Elphaba. While the connection to the original story is clear, “Wicked” offers a distinctly different narrative. Viewers should not expect the same storyline; instead, it presents a standalone tale with its own messages meant to resonate deeply with audiences. This is the story of Elphaba.
Elphaba is a truly special and unique character. Born with gifts that set her apart from others, she finds it impossible to blend in; her destiny is to stand out. However, her extraordinary nature also subjects her to ridicule and scorn. In a world where differences can be frightening, the fear of the unknown and the uncertainty surrounding it can become overwhelming. As Glinda poignantly states in the film,
“It’s not about aptitude; it’s the way you’re viewed.”
In this narrative, Elphaba is both targeted and isolated, yet this very adversity helps her uncover her remarkable strength. What was meant to destroy her ultimately becomes her source of empowerment. Glinda and Madam Morrible play crucial roles as catalysts, guiding her along her journey.
It Glitters Much More Than Emerald
The film shines on multiple levels, from its stunning scenery to the intricately designed makeup and costumes, as well as its impressive score. Words fall short in describing Cynthia Erivo’s performance; she not only embodies Elphaba perfectly but also convinces viewers of her portrayal of a young, uncertain girl thrust into the fires of mastery. Her voice is simply unmatched. Yet, she is not the only standout in the ensemble; Ariana Grande delivers a poetic performance as Glinda. The true power of acting lies in its ability to engage the audience, and Grande accomplishes this wholeheartedly. Her petulant and bratty demeanor is so off-putting that it becomes easy to root against her and champion Elphaba instead
Beyond its technical merits, the true superpower of “Wicked” lies in its screenplay, particularly in the themes and character arcs it presents. The story culminates with Elphaba empowered to forge her own path and wholeheartedly embrace self-acceptance. Though labeled as the enemy and scapegoat—underscored by the Wizard’s assertion that
“the best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy.”
—Elphaba gains the confidence to understand her true identity and resolutely refuses to let others define her. This is a tale worthy of revisiting time and again.
The Beauty in Wicked
